| Daddy and Drew hang out in the Children's Wing at St. Anthony's on Feb. 3. |
It was a challenging week.
Poor Drew.
Sunday night after the Super Bowl, Drew's little voice sounded hoarse. We didn't think much of it and even laughed a little.
When we went to bed at 11 that night, he sounded weird sleeping. We were a little nervous about it so we turned on the baby monitor which had been off since Miles moved in to the room.
By 3 a.m., he sounded awful and could barely breathe. We called our doctor, which I'm sure he loved at that hour, and he said it sounded like croup. If a steamy bathroom didn't help significantly, we should take him to the ER.
By 4 we had tried and failed with the shower trick, dropped Miles off at my parents and walked into the ER at Saint Anthony's. Luckily there was only one other patient in the whole place.
The doctor signed off on typical treatment -- a steroid and a breathing treatment of adrenaline.
He said it works on 98% of people.
He said he'll be fine in about 15 minutes.
Nope.
When he didn't respond to the breathing treatment, they called his regular doctor, whom we LOVE. They decided together to admit Drew for the day and administer more treatments
I was petrified of having to entertain this wild man for a whole day in one little room but he was not up for much action. That's how we knew he was bad off.
At 8 a.m., our regular doctor came in the room. We were surprised. He said with such a little guy struggling to breathe, he decided to leave home early to just check on us. (Did I mention we love him?)
By noon he had his last treatment and we had to wait several hours for it to wear off and see if he'd still be OK. His doctor came by AGAIN (said he had nothing better to do on his lunch break -- but it's a 20-minute drive each way. LOVE HIM). We were released at 6 and all flopped into bed at home.
Tuesday we sent Miles to school and stayed home since we hadn't slept much. We were warned that he would get worse again at night. He did but the steamy shower helped. Had a follow up doctor appointment and was cleared.
Wednesday we had a snow day. All four of us at home. Drew was... FINE. Running, laughing, fine.
Thursday we thought we'd take him to day care. We didn't have to get up with him overnight at all. We threw him into the car still asleep at 6 a.m. and he sounded ok.
By the time we got to Miss Becka's he was breathing hard again and she (luckily) turned us away. I had to scramble to get a sub and get stuff ready at school. We popped into the nurse's office. He had a 100 degree fever. Lovely.
We head home and get another doctor appointment.
This time:
Croup still around but only minor
Ear infection
RSV
Awesome.
RSV is highly contagious and can actually kill babies. We hunkered down and did breathing treatments at home. Dustin and I traded off taking off work.
By Tuesday (yes, eight days later) he was checked again and sent to daycare.
Longest. Week. Ever.
So glad he's feeling better!
